Ylläs is the biggest ski area in Finland and has one of the country's biggest vertical drops at around 464 m (the height from top to bottom of the slopes), with runs reaching up to 3 km. It spreads across two sides of the fell, with the villages of Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo below, each with its own ski school. Add 300+ km of cross-country trails and you have a resort built for skiers who like room to roam.
Sixty-two slopes and the longest runs in Finland give intermediates and stronger skiers real distance to work with, while each village's beginner zones and ski schools keep newcomers covered. The two-sided layout means you can pick a side to match the conditions or the crowds. Cross-country skiers are especially well served by the extensive trail network.
Kittilä Airport is about 35 minutes away, and Kolari, roughly 30 minutes off, is the northernmost railway station in Finland. That rail link makes Ylläs reachable by overnight train as well as by air.
Lodging splits between the two villages of Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo, each with its own character and its own access to the fell. Choosing between them is largely about which side of the mountain you want on your doorstep.
