Iso-Syöte near Pudasjärvi has the steepest patrolled lift-served terrain just south of Lapland. Several boundary lines on the wooded north and east flanks of the 432 m summit are known locally as the backside. They sit inside resort patrol but are left unmaintained, a step up from the groomers.
Access is by hiking back from the chairlift to the gladed lines. The terrain is wooded and natural, with rocks and downed timber until full cover sets in around mid-January. Lines run down the north and east flanks where the trees hold snow.
Because the lines are inside patrol but unmaintained, early-season cover hides hazards. Wait for full snowpack before committing. A helmet, beacon and a partner are recommended for the steeper trees. The resort runs occasional avalanche-awareness clinics; January to March is the window.
