These are touring fells only, no lifts, no patrol, for skiers who want to leave the resort behind. The contrast with the lift-served side is stark.
Access is from Äkäslompolo or via the Varkaankuru trailhead, giving around 250 m of vertical on open western slopes with stable wind-pack. The descents end in dense forest, so careful line choice through the trees is essential. Snowmobile traffic is restricted to designated trails.
With no patrol and no lift access, this is self-reliant terrain even though it sits beside a major resort. The forested run-outs are the technical crux. March to April gives the most reliable snow on the western slopes.
