Saana fell (1029 m) rises directly from Lake Kilpisjärvi in Enontekiö and is the de-facto hub for Finnish ski-mountaineering. It offers a steep east bowl alongside mellower south-west shoulders, with Salmivaara, Pikku-Malla and the Mallatunturit fells close by. The area holds snow into June, making it a genuine spring-mountaineering objective.
The steep east bowl is the headline line; the gentler south-west shoulders are accessed from the Malla trail. This is arctic terrain where the plateau is frequently wind-scoured to ice and cornices build above the east face. Expect a committing day rather than a casual lap.
AIARE-level avalanche skills, ski crampons and a full kit are standard here: this is advanced terrain and should not be underestimated. Cornice hazard above the east face is real and persistent. The Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre posts daily snow reports; check them before committing.
