Twelve resorts sit in and around Finnish Lapland, and they are not variations on one theme. Levi has the World Cup slalom and the shortest airport transfer; Ylläs has the largest ski area and the longest runs; Ruka opens in October and skis into May. Pyhä holds the steepest piste in the country, Pallas grooms nothing at all, and Ounasvaara is a city hill inside Rovaniemi.
Season length is the practical difference from the south: stored snow and latitude keep these fells open when southern hills are already closed. Pick by what you want out of the week. Nightlife and lift capacity point to Levi and Ruka; dark skies and cross-country distance point to Ylläs, Saariselkä and Olos; touring skiers head for Pallas.
