Helsinki overnight train (Santa Claus Express) lands in Rovaniemi at 07:20. Two-bed cabins from €49, with shower from €74 (per cabin, off-peak). Connect by Matkahuolto bus or taxi to your resort. The civilised arrival.
Every Lapland resort sits within about a two-hour drive of one of these four airports: from 15 minutes to Levi up to 1 h 45 min to Pyhä. Match your resort to its airport, then book the right charter.

Permitted 1 Nov – 31 Mar, not required: the law asks for winter tyres in winter conditions. Rental cars in Lapland always have them; cars from Helsinki may not. Check before driving north.
Reindeer cross roads at dusk and dawn. Speed limits drop to 80 km/h on Lapland highways for a reason. A collision with a reindeer must always be reported to 112.
Mid-Dec to mid-Jan: only 2–4 hours of usable light. Plan long drives for the brief midday window. Headlights stay on 24/7 by law.
Helsinki → Levi is 980 km, further than Helsinki to Stockholm. Break it up: Oulu (600 km) or Rovaniemi (840 km) make natural overnight stops.
Petrol stations get sparse north of Sodankylä. Fill up at every chance after Rovaniemi. Most stations are 24/7 unmanned card-pay only.

How early should I book flights to Lapland?
Direct charter flights for Christmas / New Year sell out by August. February school-holiday weeks (especially Finnish week 8) by October. Outside peak weeks, you can find flights 2–4 weeks ahead. The cheapest weeks are early December and after mid-March.
At Levi, Ylläs (Äkäslompolo side), Ruka, Pyhä and Saariselkä: no. The villages are walkable and resort buses run between hotels and lifts. At smaller resorts (Olos, Luosto, Pallas, Iso-Syöte, Salla) a car helps but transfers + taxis work too.
How much is an airport transfer to my resort?
Airport bus (Tunturilinjat at Kittilä, tickets from Matkahuolto): under €20 per person. Taxi from Kittilä airport to Levi (15 km): about €30–45. Pre-booked private transfers are priced by the operator: ask your accommodation. Worth booking ahead if you arrive late or with kids.
Can I take the train direct to Levi or Ylläs?
No. The railway ends at Kemijärvi (east) and Kolari (west). For Ylläs, take the train to Kolari then a 45-minute bus. For Levi, train to Rovaniemi or Kemijärvi, then bus. The overnight sleeper from Helsinki is the comfortable option both ways.
