The central belt holds the country's biggest hills outside Lapland. Tahko runs 24 slopes over two sides of a fell, Himos spreads 21 pistes across four sides and is the most-visited resort in Finland, and Paljakka has a 250 metre vertical, the largest south of Lapland. Vuokatti adds the only year-round option anywhere: an underground ski tunnel that runs through the summer.
Distances here are real, so the trip is usually a weekend or longer rather than an evening. Cross-country skiers are unusually well served, from Vuokatti's 150 km network to the urban trails at Laajis. Ukkohalla and Paljakka share a single lift pass, which effectively doubles the terrain on one trip.
